With Chris Smalling joining Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, we take a look at some of the other players who have made the jump from non-league football to top flight football.
Les Ferdinand
Ferdinand was snapped up by QPR in 1987 for £30,000 from Hayes after playing for a number of non-league sides. After being loaned out to Brentford and then Besiktas the striker became known as 'Sir Les' when he started banging them in for QPR. Later he moved to Newcastle United and then Tottenham.
Stan Collymore
Collymore initially failed to make the grade at Wolves and then Walsall before playing for Stafford Rangers in the Conference. He was signed by Palace in 1992 and later Nottingham Forest before a big move to Liverpool.
John Barnes
Barnes was scouted by Watford when playing for Sudbury Town in 1981. Given an opportunity to impress for Watford Reserves by Graham Taylor. Barnes was offered a contract and the rest is history. He went on to score 65 goals in six seasons before a £900,000 transfer to Liverpool in 1987.
Ian Wright
Wrighty only moved to a professional club, Crystal Palace, at the age of 22, after playing for Greenwich Borough. A late developer Wright did well at Palace before moving to Arsenal and becoming their top scorer of all time, until Thierry Henry took his record away.
