I have made this trip 12 times since 2000. The roads are equal to the US interstate system and are 2 lanes in each direction. There is a very straight several hundred mile stretch through the desert from Saltillo to San Luis Potosi. The tolls are about $630 Pesos. The trip takes about 9-10 hours because you can drive fast in the desert (the road is a straight line as far as you can see without a lot of other cars). If you arrive in Nuevo Laredo early in the morning, it takes less time to get your car permit. On the drive back to Nuevo Laredo there are several drug search check points including one just north of Matehuala which usually really backs traffic up.
