From straight to curly?

Hello I am african american and I have been relaxing my hair for years. I wanted the curly look but I wanted to be able to wash it and just wear it out. I did not want to use a curling iron or rods...just something I can wet and go...are there any suggestions, or do I really have to cut my hair off and start over?

  1. maybe try adding using some curl defining lotion/spray or mousse on damp hair and blowdrying with a diffuser..or even try letting it air dry.  it's supposed to bring out the natural texture in your hair.  also try a shampoo and conditioner to bring out curls.  hope this helps:)

  2. im part african american too, so my hair is curly. i usually straighten it only once a week. i love my curly hair, but only when i find new styles to go with. try some things out!

  3. girl!! curly hair is cute don't damage ur hair just learn how to style it! straighten it like once a week only.

  4. after you wash your hair, wait till its damp, then put in mousse and gel [scrunch it: put the gel in one hand, rub hands together, put hands at bottom of hair, lift to top and squeeze]. put it in a messy bun for about 10 minutes, then let it down... good luck!!

  5. Before I changed salons, I had an african american client who had unruly, kinky, curly hair. She wanted the option of styling her hair straight once in a while, but wanted loose curls on the off time.

Why does it have to be one or the other?

I simply permed her hair with a a bigger rod than her natural curl and she LOVED it!

What I'm saying is this: although clients may not be happy with their present curl, relaxing isn't the only answer. You can change the size and shape of curls by a basic perm, no relaxer. Just reconfigure the size of their natural curl with perm rods that are a few sizes larger. The end result is hair that has loose curl, and can be straighted with less effort to the client.

It's basic hairdressing 101. Do what the client wants, with the least amount of damage.

It's all in the consultation, it's how I roll...
