  1. c.  you are correct.

essentially it's a fixed tax on people, rich or poor.

  2. I'm guessing d since the more you make the more your taxed.

    i was wrong

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poll_tax

  3. I belive it's (A)

  4. How about E) None of the above.  Historically it would be A, which is a tax on those wishing to vote, this would take away the poorest people's right to vote as they couldn't afford it.

but the modern meaning is a uniform tax on individuals based on their existance rather than their income.  So, the government, if they levied a poll tax would simply say everyone owes $5,000 no matter what you make in a year.

  5. the answer is voting.  Orignally the poll tax was insituted as a substitute for owning property the was that voting was originally set.  In order to vote you would have to pay a fee to vote, the poll tax, these taxes became famous in the Jim Crow south for keeping the African Americans who were mostly poor from voting.  Another was literacy tests, which were doctored to be almost impossible for African Americans to pass, as a part of the Civil Rights movement both were declared unconstitutional

  6. When you go to the polls, you go to vote. A polling place is a place you go to vote. The answer is A. It's illegal to place restrictions on voting, like a tax to have the privilege, which would not allow poor people to vote.

MORE than scary that there are answers on here that are wrong or just a guess. You can't PROTECT your rights, people, if you don't KNOW them!

  7. A..  But the poll tax was repealed by passage of the 24th  Amendment

    Amendment XXIV

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.

Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

  8. A poll tax is A, voting. In the late 1800's, it was legal for African-Americans to vote, however many states in the south wanted to prevent that from happening. So, many instituted a poll tax, which required payment to vote at the "polls." Many African-Americans couldn't afford this and so it prevented them from voting, keeping African-Americans out of the voting process. It only took them about 100 years to finally add an ammendment to the constitution outlawing this practice.

Oh and in response to another answer that said it is also a tax on the income... The tax being referred to as the same tax on income regardless of how much you make is a "flat" tax, not a poll tax. A poll tax ONLY refers to voting.

Hopefully this helps you with your homework/quiz. :)
