  1. I was there in March and we took a water taxi to our hotel right near the termini from the airport and it was $25 a person, but it was planned by our travel agent.  I must admit that it was a lovely ride, but not really worth it.  You can take a waterbus located near the taxis for about 2Euro.

Don't be afraid to stay out of San Marco, Venice is a tiny city.  Like I said we stayed near the termini in a lovely hotel.  It was the Hotel Abbazia.  The staff was amazingly kind and helpful.  The rooms although tiny were well appointed and had wonderful bathrooms!  And the breakfast was wonderful.  I was no more than a 20 minute walk or waterbus ride from anywhere.  The downside of this hotel was that it wasn't located directly on any canal, but it did have a lovely courtyard in the middle that every room has a view of.

  2. The cost is about 5 Euro for the blur (color) ATVO bus. You cannot take a boat from Treviso because it's on (in) the main land. Take the bus to Piazzale Roma - the last stop from the main land to Venice. From Piazzale Roma you can either take a water taxi (will cost you about 60 Euro) or the Vaporetto (the water bus) and that'll run you 6 Euro.

there are no cheep hotels in San Marco but I can give you the name of a B&B just behind the Plazza (San Marco):

    Cà Altana

Bed & Breakfast di Gian Luca Lucarda

    Calle del Rimedio 4410

    30122 Venice - Castello

    tel. +39.041.5202354

Note 1. Castello is the name of the "neighborhood"

Note 2. Gian Luca's place has a grad view over the city. In fact it's on a 4th floor.... the only handicap is that you've got to walk up - there is no elevator. BUT trust me - the view is worth a million dollars!

  3. When I was there in 2003, it was possible to walk outside Treviso airport and just grab a bus and go to the main station in Venice.  It was not a city bus, it was more like an actual shuttle bus that had a set price and took you straight there (poster below is correct on name and price - ATVO and it is blue!).  It was very late at night when we arrived but it was very easy to find the bus (I had read about it in one of my travel books) and the airport is VERY small!  Once you get to the stazione in Venice, you take a water bus (vaporetto) to Piazza San Marco.  There are many hotels around there.  I don't remember where we stayed but there are many cheap hotels that are just a short walk from Piazza San Marco.  I had good luck searching on the internet for every hotel except for the one that we stayed at in Florence.  (Be careful if you are particular about having air conditioning - the American concept of it and the Italian concept are two totally different things.)  By the way, you should avoid the water taxis - they can be very expensive and charge very high fees for each piece of your luggage!  The vaporetto is pretty easy to get around on and people are generally very helpful!  Good luck - it is a beautiful city!
