I know you're supposed to hit down on short and mid irons but from what number iron is it good to start to sweep the ball instead of hit down on it?

  1. The only club you should really be hitting on the up swing is the driver. Every other club (including fairway metals) should be hit on the downswing

  2. to be honest you shouldnt sweep any clubs because if your looking to achieve height spin lifts it into the air, and to put spin on it you hit down on to the ball but it all depends on yourself, it doesnt matter how you swing or how you hit it as long as you get the best results, i.e look at jim furyk his swing is ugly but he is still awesome, hit how you hit best,

    hope this lowers your handicap

  3. None of them.  Even the long irons you need to make a decending blow on the ball and trap it between the turf and the clubface.  Due to the length of the club, the long irons will have a shallower angle of attack, but you still need to release the clubhead and take a small divot (after you hit the ball.)  This will help promote a higher trajectory ball flight with more spin, making it easier to land those long irons softly when hitting to tight pins or guarded greens.

  4. From the six iron and back.

  5. There are different schools of thought on this one.  I dont think one is better than the other. You'll have to figure this out for yourself.  Personally, I play the ball in the same spot for ALL my irons, unless I'm trying to play some kind of low, high, draw, fade, etc.  You may find you need to play the long and middle irons a little further forward and thats just fine.  Dont be afraid to experiment and use what works regardless of what any textbook might say.

  6. Ixnaytim, your a what 16 handicapper?  You know nothing about golf, just shut up.  You have contributed nothing in any of your answers or questions.

  7. Here's how it was explained to me by a 1 hndcp golfer.

When you "sweep" or "pick" the ball, the point-of-contact is at the bottom of your clubface (i.e. below the "sweetspot").  You can tell this by placing a ball and the club on a table together.

By hitting "down" on the ball, the point-of-contact is more on the "sweetspot" of the clubface.

Usually, the long irons have smaller club faces and catching the sweetspot doesn't require hitting down or trapping the ball.  Well, at least not as much!  So, my opinion is 2-4 irons can be swept, if that's easier for you.  But even those can be played just a little back in your stance and trapped for a good shot!

But far better golfers than I will give you better advice...I'm still a 12 hndcp.

  8. It all depends on your swing. This is a good question. I would say that the right answer is whatever # you can feel the most comfortable changing your swing. I put the same swing on my 4i as my LW. i say the woods are the only club to sweep.

  9. You can 'think' sweep with your 3 and 2 Iron, but you are still hitting down on it, just not as much as a wedge due to its shallow clubface.
