I have held a clean UK driving licence since the early 1980's. Does this qualify me for HGV driving? If so, which HGV class?

  1. I'm not 100% certain about this, but I believe you need to do a HGV test to add HGV to your current licence. Try contacting the DVLA; they will be able to advise you.

  2. None at all.

To drive an L.G.V. (any commercial vehicle with a gross weight over 7.5 tonnes), you must have Category C on your driving licence.

To drive artics, you must have Category C+E.

You don't have either of those Categories. Therefore, you cannot drive L.G.V.s

  3. No, it just covers you to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes GVW (the old pre - HGV weight limit) rather than the newer 3.5 tonnes. This is shown on your licence as category C1, or C1+E with a trailer.

  4. It qualifies you for Catagory C1 up to 7.5 tonnes. You can drive anything up to that weight. In order to drive anything larger than that you would have to go for the full cat C license. It does not qualify you for C + E however (articulated lorries) as you would have to obtain that license (as well as the full Cat C).

Unfortunately for me I obtained my license not long after the rules changed, it was good that my job saw fit to put me through the HGV class C license so I now have that too.

  5. It doesn't.

You need to take a HGV test to get a HGV licence.

  6. I believe you have to do a test in order to get a HGV licence, at least that's what someone i know had to do.

  7. Im quite sure that there is an individual license for Heavy Goods Vehicles, although dont quote me.
