  1. I think a single human child in the wilderness has a concept of self despite no societal interaction. It just takes thought.

  2. Partially, from our evolved human nature interacting with the social milieu and partially, from cognitive interactions of our large brain; emergent self-consciousness. You do not have to assume anything; George Herbert Mead was refuted long ago.
