I have found that for basic things like html, books are not that necessary.  I recommend checking out http://w3schools.com/

Also, I have gone through many books over many different subjects and have found that many of the really thick books are full of nonsense.  I've gone with the Visual QuickStart Guides from Peachpit Press for almost everything.  They also have QuickPro guides that go into things that require more information.  For example: there is no quickpro guide for html because there isn't much to it, but you'll find the quickpro guides on PHP and similar.
