Question:

Front projector. Can anyone recommend a good front projector?

I don't like those tiny LCD displays. I like to watch movies on a huge screen in a dark room. I know an LCD or plasma display is much clearer but the feeling being inside a movie theater beats them all. I need a recommendation for a good front projector with decent specs and a low price. I have been reading a few reviews and like the Optoma DV 11. What's your take on that model? Thanks.

  1. The biggest and really only issue I have with the DV11 is the bang for the buck.  You're basically paying $900 for a 480p projector with a built in DVD player.  Unless you just have to have them one unit I'd go for a separate DVD player since they're less than $100 and get an HD projector.  I recently picked up a great HD70 720p projector from www.tigerdirect.com for like $680 bucks after a $200 rebate.

There are plenty of 720p projectors on the market for about $700 so if you add a $100 DVD player you're still only paying like $800 total for a DVD player and an HD projector instead of an Enhanced Definition one.

In addition to the Optoma I also really like the InFocus and Epson brands as I've had all 3 at one point or another.

  2. well thats depends on what you have on mind because the model you said is 480p and integrated dvd player sooooo. for me not a good option you need a projector alone not less than 720p even better if is a 1080p and apart a dvd. you can read here theres a wizard to tell what can be a good projector depends on your needs your room you light condition and budget a good cheap 720p projector can start around  $1,100

  3. I agree that a projector makes much more sense than a flatscreen HDTV ... I don't know what all the fuss is about re "big-screen" TVs ...  relative to a 100"+ projector screen they are tiny.

One comment ... a good projector can give just as good a picture (even better considering it is larger) as a flat-screen HDTV. That's why rich folks put dedicated projector-based home theatres in their houses.

The DV11 is a good choice if you want a portable all-in-one home theatre, don't have a DVD player or A/V receiver, a 90" or smaller screen is OK, and you are willing to forgo an HD image. The street price of ~$900 for a projector/DVD and speakers is an OK, but not exceptional deal. See the link for a review of the DV10 -- the earlier model ... and the DV11 should be even better.

But if you prefer an HD (720p or 1080p) image, want (and have room for, See last link) a screen larger than about 90", and don't mind (or prefer) separate components (DVD player, receiver, surround speakers) there are other choices. See the article at the 2nd link for options. The site the previous respondent provided (projectorcentral.com) is a great source for recommendations too. See the list of recommended models accessible from the home page.

Note you will need a screen too ... but can paint or make your own for less than $100. See 3rd link.

    Hope this helps.
