Front wheeler Gypsy Robin takes the Beaumont Stakes without breaking a sweat
Peachtree Stable’s Sacristy headed a field of 6 in the Grade 2, $150,000 Beaumont Stakes over at Keeneland’s synthetic surface over a distance of about seven furlongs on 15 April, 2012, but the winner of the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes never counted on a return
of, Gypsy Robin, who was a pleasant surprise for her connections but a devastating return for her adversaries on the field.
Co-owned and trained by Wesley Ward, the 3-year-old filly might not be on the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks trail on 4 May at Churchill Downs, but she certainly made a massive comeback to the races after an absence of more than seven months.
Wesley Ward owns the filly in partnership with Gatewood Bell and Wes Welker, as the Kentucky bred filly made a late debut for her new season, but a successful one nonetheless.
In the Beaumont Stakes, the 2 to 1 shot was ridden by jockey Jeffrey Sanchez, who guided the filly off to a swift start from the gate and into the early lead.
She got away carving modest fractions of 24.15 seconds for the opening quarter mile and then she pulled off a 49.10 seconds half mile marker run swinging off the final bend into the stretch.
The 11 to 10 choice, Sacristy was guided by Julien Leparoux, who stalked Gypsy Robin all the way at the backstretch, but rounding the bend Gypsy Robin was still in command, Julien Leparoux made a meaning full move and progressed the daughter of Pulpit four
wide.
It gave Sacristy the room she needed to challenge the leader, but Gypsy Robin wasn’t going to give up her lead and hard work that easily, as the filly responded when asked by Sanchez and she was never in any sort of threat to lose her lead to Sacristy, as
Gypsy Robin defeated her by a comfortable margin of three lengths.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Daaher, out of mare Fiesty Princess by Indian Charlie, won the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth the last time she was seen in action, but with the Beaumont under her belt there will be loads of Gypsy Robin this year.
