Question:

Frontline or Advantage to treat fleas?

It seems my home and pets have become infested with fleas. I have 1 small dog and 2 cats. I have never dealt with a flea problem before, so I am totally lost about what to use to treat my pets. I read about frontline and advantage but want to know your personal experience with these products and which you would recommend. And is it true that advantage is not waterproof? I would like to know because I bathe my dog frequently. I also bought some flea collars (they are still in the box) but someone said they don't really work. Is it true? Thanks.

  1. Frontline Plus and Advantage are excellent products.  I use Frontline Plus on my two dogs and Advantage on my cat and have not a single flea on any of them or in my house.  Advantage is not waterproof; that is not a problem as long as you don't bathe the animal within the first 48 hours before or after use (before because if you strip the oils out of the animal's coat and skin, it won't absorb as well).

Flea collars are ineffective and potentially toxic to your pet.  They are the worst kind of garbage.  Avoid.

  2. Frontline and Advantage are both great products.  I personally use Revolution on my cats as it prevents Heartworm disease, treats for fleas and intestinal parasite roundworm.  Which ever one you choose to use, don't bathe before putting product on.  You can bathe 24 / 36 hours (personal preference) after putting on as it should have had time to use the skin oils to translocate and be effective.  Not an issue with the Revolution as it is absorbed into the body they excreted back into the oil glands.

I would not reccommend  flea collars as they can be deadly for cats especially....and usually are not effective.

Even if you put these products on your pets, you still need to deal with the fleas in the environment....in your house, in the pets bedding. You will need to do a thorough cleaning of all bedding, carpets and furniture that your animals come in contact with.  Your vaccumn can be your best friend.  Even if you have wood or tile floors, vaccumn everywhere even in closets.  When done, throw out the bag, eggs, pupae, larva and fleas can get back in to your house and reinfest your place.  Find house or premise treatments that contain IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) in the list of ingredients.  Follow their directions on the can for use and you should be flea free in no time.

And NEVER, EVER put the product Advantix on you cat.  It will kill it. It says so on the lable.

  3. Hi! :)

I use Frontline Plus (and Advantage in the fall because we don't have ticks in the area) for my dogs and Advantage or Frontline for my cats.  They really work.  Unfortunley flea collars don't work (and when the really good ones do work it is only around the neck area, but are not worth the danger).  Best of luck!

Ad on~* I am sorry I wrote this wrong earlier so I edited it.  If someone doesn't have cats vets also recomend Advantix but I would not use it with any household with cats.  Never put Advantix on a cat.  Only use dog Frontline on dogs/cat Frontline on cats.

  4. Hmm I say frontline. In the book "Your new kitten week by week guild"

Its say it is best. Also,if your want to use the collar (which I don't recommend) make sure you can put you middle and index finger in between you cat's neck and the leash. And,

I don't really think flea collars work (unless they have chemicals on it)

    and can hurt your dog/cat.
