  1. Website below with native nurseries for you

Hope that you would consider native plants as they are usually better at coping with harsh conditons

    Happy planting

  2. you looking for evergreen or deciduous? aspens are good down to zone 1 great for wind breaks, fall color and wonderful in groupings. heather and heath are great evergreen flowering shrubs

  3. go to the local nursery.

  4. I recommend the Gardening Australia site as well.  BBC Gardening is also worth a look and has a plant selector like the Gardening Australia site.  American Better Homes and Gardens is also worth a look.

I grow a full english garden in inland NSW so many cold tolerant english plants will tolerate heat as well with a regular garden water.

If you are near Armidale you should check what they have planted, there are some magnificent gardens and trees.  Don't be afraid to knock on peoples doors and ask what they have growing if you see a fantastic tree.  Most people love to be asked and you will then know what the advanced tree looks like.

Be careful regarding 'fast growers' , I have a Formosan Liquidamber (different from the common one), very fast but now it is older every storm breaks off large limbs, I wouldn't recommend to anyone.  Many fast growing plants like some of the native shrubs, grow fast but only have a limited lifespan (as little as 10 years and then you have to remove), native trees can live much longer.  If you chose natives be very careful, most won't like the temperatures in your area and you may be better to get advice from your local forestry nursery.  Most of the best flowering natives eg large flowering grevilleas, hakeas, geraldton wax etc do not like frost.

I would recommend Liquidambers, chinese elm (Ulmus), pin oak (quercus), for relatively quick trees.  Check whether your soil is acid or alkaline - cheap soil test from nursery or ask at the nursery.  If your soil is acid you can have Rhododendrons, azaleas etc.  Good shrubs to look for if neutral to alkaline would be the viburnums and flowering quinces.

Take your time and do your research and with your climate you can have a great garden easily.

  5. You need trees that will tolerate snow if you live in the Armidale, Glen Innes Guyra and Inverell and Tenterfield areas approximately.

I hope that these sites give you some species that will thrive in a cold climate. Also Gardening Australia should have some species that are good such as English or North American Pines or Maples or Oaks.

    Good Luck!!!
