Question:

Frozen breastmilk turning yellow...

I just noticed in the freezer, that all the breastmilk I have stored is suddenly yellowish in color. My fresh breastmilk is never yellow...always white. Is something wrong with it? Has this ever happened to you?

  1. I'm not really sure why it happens but it happens to me too. My lil guy is 7 months now and it's been happening the whole time. I'm sure it's normal and fine, I've never actually used any of the frozen milk, but I would if I needed to.

  2. No, there's nothing wrong with it.  The cream or fatty part of the milk separates when stored and is often yellowish in color.  I'm sure you're fine.

  3. That's the colostrum, the good stuff that your baby gets all the nutrition/fat from!  It's a good thing! :)

  4. I do not know why but I do know that mine did.  I had some stored up for 4 months, and then when I went back to work we started with the oldest first, and my daughter never had any trouble with it.

  5. If I remember correctly, the reason it turns yellow is because the fat separates from the other milk solids.  When you defrost it, you have to mix it up really well.
