Fruit Fly trap with Beer?

Question

Is it true if you just set a small container of beer near fruit flys they will go for a drink and get caught in the liquid, or is there more to the trap i need to know before i do it?

Probably will work better if you put a layer of saran wrap on the top of the glass and poke small holes in it. The fruit flies can go into the holes, but for some reason can't get out. It worked well for me. Except I didn't use beer, I used old banana's. I drank the beer. But any sweet-ish liquid/substance will work.
