Fruit trees grown in north of US?

The cherry and apple trees are numerous in the northern USA.  Neither orange or plum trees are common.

No chance of growing oranges in the North.  But, there are a few types of plums that can deal with the cold.  Santa Rosa is a variety I have in my backyard that is doing well.  We're in Northern Illinois.  Just make sure you buy one from a local source.  If you go to WalMart or Home Depot you might be buying plants raised in a much more mild climate.  Good luck!
