Frustrated Australian media takes a jab at Duncan Fletcher – Cricket News Update
After suffering a couple of bad umpiring decisions on the first day of the Boxing Day Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Duncan-Andrew-Gwynne-Fletcher-c54742.
The main reason behind the current anger in Australia is the absence of the controversial Decision Review System (DRS), which was scrapped as Indian cricket board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not agree on its use.
Fletcher, who always supported the induction of the system to improve umpiring decisions, is now a silent spectator since he is coaching the side which is a staunch opposer of the new system.
On the first day, Mike Hussey (0) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan (68) lost their wickets on controversial decisions which placed the hosts under pressure as they finished the day by posting 277 runs for the loss of six wickets.
After these fateful decisions, the Australian media had a field day as they criticised the Indian team and coach for denying the use of the technology which would have prevented Hussey and Cowan from taking a walk back to the pavilion.
“Duncan Fletcher hates hypocrites. The Indian coach must have trouble looking at himself in the mirror. For well over a decade, Fletcher has been a strong advocate for using technology to enhance umpiring decisions," read 'The Herald Sun'.
In his book, “Behind the Shades”, Fletcher had criticised the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for not keeping him in the loop while approving the use of UDRS on trail basis in county cricket during the year 2007.
“I was already feeling that the ECB was showing me no support during the World Cup in 2007 but it really miffed me that nobody spoke to me about this system. It was my idea after all, and nothing had changed since I first thought of it in Western Province in 1995,” wrote the former England coach.
Australian media now wants to know why the vocal supporter of the system is mute in the ongoing series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
While Cricket Australia (CA) supported the use of the system in the Test series, it was the Indian board that did not heed to the requests by the Australian board and since according to the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) the system is only applicable in the series when both boards favour its use, the system was scrapped for the series.
