Question:

Fuel Duty..... couldn't it be cut?

Couln't the Chancellor cut fuel duty instead of raise it? No one could have forseen these daily oil prices increases therefore the extra tax revenue would not be figured into the figures. Surely, if the PM 'feels' our pain, he could get Darling to cut fuel duty say, about 12p a litre - it would help and the PM says he wants to help!!!!!!

  1. The tax on fuel is or was 46p a litre that's almost half of what we pay.

The Government should cut back on wasteful foreign aid to countries we've been giving to for years and hasn't made a blind bit of difference to the people of the country

    The keeping of illegal immigrants.

Tag the less serious criminals instead of paying £650.00 a week to private companies.

Curb ministers foreign trips and outrageous expenses.

Bring back the old National Health policies instead of contracting out cleaning staff, sack the managers and bring back the Matrons etc.

I think the only people who are being helped by the Government are the people who are helping themselves.

  2. Yes it could be cut, but where do you want the money to come from instead?

There has to be taxation, so cutting it from one source means adding it to another.

    .

  3. it should be cut as the motorist pays heavily for road tax-insurance-petrol- and all the other little debts one has to pay to run a car.MPs do they pay for their petrol with their cars or do they use "company" cars and never pay for them.

  4. I agree, it would not have been too hard to work out a level, above which the fuel duty would be reduced...say $100 a barrel, the Chancellor must be raking in the duty at the moment, so he is not feeling any pain....and it would help to make the present Govt. a little more popular.....cant see it though. Can you?

  5. YOU GOT SISTER

  6. I think that 80% tax on fuel and rising plus the vat as well is wringing the motorist too much .Fuel costing what it does puts up food prices and has even caused some heavy goods companies to go out of business therefore people out of work.

Thoes who live where there is no public transport are being

squeezed to death. The nearest train station is 40 miles away

but no bus to get there.Cars are a neccessity not a toy.

Help,I think not, the duty is going up soon, again.

  7. In effect the duty on fuel has not risen in more than five years, it is true to say that each time the oil companies increase the pump price it includes extra vat & duty.

There are two things that the government can do to address the current situation..........

    1)  Reduce duty and vat totaling say 18p / litre.

    2)  Force the oil companies to reduce their pump prices by, say 12p / litre.

The final pump price would be (at todays pump price of £1.15 / litre) .......... 80p / litre, which would bring it more in line with other countries in Europe.

This situation is providing a massive 'windfall profit' for both the government and the oil companies!

In saying that, NO government, Labour, Tory or liberal is likely to do that ............ Petrol / diesel is a 'Golden Goose' in the UK.

  8. yes but with inflation the way it is where would they get the money to pay for the police on our streets , our army in Iraq and the nurses in our hospitals? they would have to cut back somewhere , they have already had to borrow money to pay for the tax cut following the removal of the 10p tax rate - so what essential service would you like to get rid of to pay for the 2p your going to save?

you can not have it both ways!

edit : theres something wrong with what you are saying regarding getting more fuel duty from oil , I know where you are coming from but something is not quite right and I can not put my finger on it. If I work out whats wrong I will be back

edit : got it the government do not put a %age on a litre of oil in the budget they put a fixed cost (eg: 2p a litre) its the economists that work this out as a percentage and confuse people - so if the price of oil rises the government are NOT making any extra cash the extra goes to the fuel stations and the producers - the tax is set at a certain amount as per the budget! plus of course the amounts set in the previous budgets

  9. the way things are going the government are going to have to do something drastic .the cost of fuel is causing serious problems to everyone in this country.food prices are starting to spiral out of control, power bills are going through the roof.all gordon brown says he is the best man for the job well with this ego in charge .the old news paper headline comes to mind will the last person out of the country turn off the light.
