Question:

Fuel-Efficient 4x4? Any Ideas?

i'm looking to get a used 4x4 because i can't afford a new car. I work at a mountain so i'm going to be doing a lot of driving through the snow and therefore i need a 4x4. Only problem is i don't have all that much money so i want something that is fairly good on gas. Any clues on what 4x4 is cheap, fuel-efficient (semi), and will be able to bet me safely through the snow?

  1. There aren't really any traditional SUV's that get EPA fuel economy rated over 15/20 city/highway mpg (the highest I've seen is the 4Runner w/ 16/21) so try a crossover like the Subaru Forester. It gets decent gas mileage (rated at low 20's city and high 20's highway), standard 4 wheel drive, and is competent off road. You can probably get a good used one between 5 and 10 grand.

  2. Well I can't think of one....what you're looking for is a dream car.

    Good luck!

  3. The Toyota 4 Runner is nice.  I live in an area where it also snows and allot of the cars around here are just front wheel drive and do just fine.  It's the guy that has a truck that's not a 4x4 with no weight in the bed of the truck that gets stuck, but a little KIA or a Ford Focus with front wheel drive gets around town just fine.  Your going to pay a premium price for a 4x4 from any dealership where it snows.  A 4x4 is always a best seller from any area where it snows.  Good luck car hunting.
