Fuel efficent cars?

i'm getting my first car soon and i was just wondering what are some of the best cars for gas mileage? i'd prefer one more of the SUV style, but any suggestion would be helpful !

my old 93 mitsubishi mirage gets around 40 mpg, its a 5 speed.

if your getting a first car, get a 96-00 civic, its the only j*p car i like....if you want power get a 99-00 civic si, or you could aim for a cobalt, those have nice looks, ford focus is an option 2.
