Question:

Fuel filter light stays on whats wrong?

I have a 1997 F350 7.3L powerstroke. In the mornings or when it is cold the fuel filter light stays on and dims and flickers as you accelerate. When I level off on the accelerator the fuel filter light gets bright again. I have already changed the fuel filter which sits on top of the engine. I drain the water if any in the cannister that the fuel filter sits in. When the truck warms up the light goes away or if it is HOT outside ( TEXAS ) it does not stay on long at all. From what I understand there is only one fuel filter. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks...

  1. The 97 F350 has only one fuel filter.  The light is to let you know if you have water in the fuel.  If you have changed the filter and drained the cannister it more than likley is a faulty sensor.  They are about $30-40 bucks.

  2. diesel have 2 fuel filters

  3. try www.alldata.com

  4. Your truck only has the one fuel filter on top of the engine and if you have opened the drain to drain any accumulated water off, you probably have a bad sensor. The sensor is to detect water in the fuel and it's not uncommon for them to go bad.

  5. not all diesels have 2 filters not sure about your truck that is a question for you ford dealer call and ask about price for fuel filter then ask if it takes 2 of them if so they will tell you then say thanks bye.

i'd look at the filter sensor or a loose connection to that sensor possibly sensor wire shorting out, that is most likely going to be it.

  6. this is a guess...

    Maybe its a sensor fault.

It seems it the light only comes on when its cold - hoses expand in heat... the sensor could be mistaking cold consricting fuel lines as decreased flow faking blockage???

some diesels have two filters i think.

    just an idea.
