Fuel injection wont inject

Question

1998 Ford Contour will run if you spray fuel into air inlet, but it wont run otherwise.

well obviously the injectors are clogged, you know that. try fuel injector cleaner or to save time just have them all replace and have your entire fuel delivery system inspected for any other issues.

Well there is a simpler approach to diagnosing this. You can do one of 2 things. You can get a noid light. A noid light is a light that plugs in place of one of your injectors. You unplug the injector and plug in the noid light and have an assistant turn the car over with the key. If the noid light flashes you can safely assume you are getting the proper injector pulse. If it lights up without flashing when cranking the engine, you know you are getting power to the injector but not a trigger to inject.I would suspect a cam or crank sensor at that point. If it doesn't light up at all when cranking, then you probably have no voltage going to the injector. That could be several things from simply a blown fuse to a wiring problem.

If it did pulse then you can assume there is no fuel getting to the injector which would most likely mean your fuel pump has failed. If I am not mistaking, the fuel pump is accessable under the back seat in a Contour. But don't hold me to that.

the gas might not be making it up to the engine. change the gas filter and see if it will start on its own.

Its most likely not the injectors, It could be either the fuel pump itself, or a fuel pump relay or fuse... Check to see if the fuel pump is getting power and a ground, if it is, you have a bad pump...

if you can start the car after priming the system and it will remain running, then you have a computer problem. a timer has failed in it. if it will only run for a short time, then you could still have a computer problem. that is what controls the injectors.
