  1. The quickest way is the Autostrada, toll highways.  There is a lot of traffic around the bigger cities around 5-6pm and in the morning 8-9am.

  2. If you are renting a car, ensure that you request a diesel car.  I just came back from Italy (Abruzzo area) yesterday and was paying about €1.09 - €1.14 per liter for diesel.  Unleaded is much higher - about €1.25 - €1.40 per liter.  With as far as you are driving, this will make a big difference.  Diesel cars also get better gas mileage than Unleaded cars.

Also, don't forget to account for the price of the tolls on the Autostrada's.  They are pretty high.  You can put your travel itinerary in viamichelin.com and it will estimate both your fuel and toll costs.

  3. The cost of fuel/gas in Italy is much higher than in the US.  The pay by the liter.   Roughly, 1.45 euro per liter

  4. When we lived in Italy we were fortunate enough to get to use NATO gas coupons, because we were military....much cheaper. But for the average person gas is around 1.30 euro a liter...translates to around $6-7 dollars a gallon, and WE complain about the gas prices here!!! PUH LEEZ!!

  5. Depends on your miles.
