Question:

Fuel prices in the UK?

Since the rapid increase of fuel prices, are you managing to keep putting fuel in your car? Has anyone had to sell their car because they cant afford fuel prices anymore?

I'm just to say managing, for now. Just wondering about other people in the UK.

Cheers

  1. A lot of people are having to be a bit more careful about their motoring costs. There are many guides to saving money on fuel by driving better- some say you can save up to 25%. My own personal experience backs this up, but you have to drive like a 90 year old! It's not fun but it does save money.

Here are some tips to save money from the web

Leave with time to spare Rushing and the impatient driving it results in are very detrimental to fuel economy and can leave you more likely to have an accident.

Drive smoothly and avoid sharp acceleration and deceleration Try not to stop if you can avoid doing so safely, decelerate gently though the gears as you approach junctions etc.

Don’t rev your engine unnecessarily Try and keep engine revs under 2500 rpm for a petrol car and 2000 for a diesel car- change gear as early as you safely can.

Don’t use the air conditioning unless you need to If you do use it try the economy mode if it has one. Air conditioning alone can decrease your results by 2-3 MPG

Use cruise control if you have it The car will choose efficient settings better than you can.

Drive within the speed limit A car travelling at 80 mph can use up to 35% more fuel than a car travelling at 60 mph.

Turn off electrical equipment that you don’t need (heated windscreen and heated mirrors for example) when you are done with them.

  2. Certainly have cut down the amount of driving. Now we plan & adjust alot more. We have found now we are spending less on fuel. We also use the bikes & walk alot more. So we are getting fitter. The one down side is my wifes family live 100 miles away so we don't got to visit every 4/5 weeks like we used to so the kids are missing Granma & Aunties. I'm an orphan so it doesn't bother me.

  3. yes i had a 16valve escort had to sell it and buy a 1.4 fiesta just so i could afford to go to work to feed my family its not fair the poor seem to be getting poorer

  4. Not so much on the cutting down journeys, but will only put in £20 per week in the tank and that has to last me...

I have been driving more carefully though - not braking so hard, or accelerating so quickly and shockingly it does make a difference. Trouble is, I find that am being cut up a lot more on the roads!!!

  5. I am managing just now....only just.  Next year my tax , insurance and MOT are al due in February. If fuel prices are still crazy I am selling my car and buying a travel pass.

  6. I have cut down my mileage, definitely. I still have to drive to work - but I tend to park my car at the weekends and not use it until Monday morning, unless it is REALLY necessary.

  7. i work in construction and luckily this latest job is fairly local getting away with 20 quid at moment a week i just used to fill it when it needed it but cant afford it any more the next job is around 100 mile round trip per day if they dont lay me off first i was thinking of replacing my car to something a bit newer but that is out the window now i will have to stick with my 1.4 p reg astra for now

  8. Limiting our journeys, running on fumes and charging the teens of the house £2.00 for a drop off at their chosen destination...........This seems mean but unfortunately needs must at the moment.
