Fulham Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed was not pleased at all with his team’s performance but has voiced his support of Mark Hughes after their humiliating 4-1 defeat by Manchester City at Craven Collage. He has vowed to help Hughes
with cash in order to turn the fortunes of the club in the January transfer window.
The chairman showed his frustration at the manager after meeting with squad and staff members at the training ground.
The 77-year-old gave a hard lecture to his flop stars. Fulham are now 17th in the table and are level on points with Wigan Athletic who are 3rd from the bottom. He said that the team should build on last year’s
performance when they reached the final of the Europa Cup. Now it looks as though they are doomed for a relegation fight.
The warning came as a surprise to some but Fayad has given assurances to the Manager, whom he considers quite shrewd. He also vowed to spend in the January transfer window and bring in new players so that they can compete in the
2nd half of the season and improve their standings in the table.
Fulham right fullback Chris Baird saw his team’s lackluster performance against City and urged his team to do well in the future. He is confident that if the team can work together and start believing in themselves, they can cement
their place in the top half of the table.
Baird said: “We didn't do the things we were supposed to do against City, which was get in their faces early on and play in their half. We were sloppy and it wasn't like us at all.”
He added: “We have to move on and, hopefully, we can turn it around this weekend against Birmingham City. We're going to give 100 per cent and deliver a much better display. It's not nice looking at the table and seeing us in 17th place but I think we're in
a false position - we're a much better team than we showed last weekend.”
Fulham have also been struggling with some injuries. Their star striker and England International Bobby Zamora has been injured for some time now and his injury has proved to be a major setback for the team. The team has been struggling
to find goals these days. Al Fayed believes that if money is spent wisely and brings in some new players they can still be contenders for a European place.
Hughes has major concerns in all department including attack, midfield and goalkeeping. Their current No. 1 keeper Mark Schwarzer has not yet committed his future to the club and even if he does he will be unavailable due to his
national commitment as he joins Australia for the Asia Cup.
The Welsh manager has already targeted his former employers Manchester City for the signature of Shay Given, Roque Santa Cruz and Shaun Wright Phillips. The trio is unhappy at the club and will be looking to leave in January and
they could end up at Fulham.
