Fulham boss claims Manchester City can win English Premier League
Fulham manager Mark Hughes says that Manchester City are capable of winning the English Premier League title this season.
Hughes saw his side dismantled 4-1 by City on Sunday 21 November at Craven Cottage when Roberto Mancini opted to deploy a more attacking formation. A double by Carlos Tevez and strikes by Paolo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure were enough for the Citizens to take
all three points back to the City of Manchester Stadium and move back into the league's top four.
Hughes was dismissed as City boss in December 2009 despite having an identical points total to Mancini at this stage of the season, but claims that the mega-rich club could make a serious push for the championship if Mancini lets his talented players attack.
He told reporters: "On their performance today certainly they're contenders. They were excellent. If they have belief and there's some forward thinking, and maybe they're a bit more attack-minded as they were today on more occasions, there's no reason why
they shouldn't be. They've got as good a chance as anybody. We allowed good players too much time and space and we can't afford to do that. The game was over by half-time."
However, Mancini was quick to point out that good performances against Sunderland and Birmingham City had counted for little as his side only taking one point from those games and that praise was a fickle thing.
He said: "Our best performance was the second half against Birmingham (0-0), and the first half against Sunderland (where they eventually lost 1-0). But this is football. Last week I was a 'stupid' manager who was six points behind the leaders. Now I am
the 'best' manager because I'm only three points off the top of the league. If you win, you're considered to be the top. If you lose, you're stupid. I know what happens. I played football for 20 years and I've been a manager for 10, so I know the way it works.”
