Fulham's Philippe Senderos out for six months
Fulham defender Philippe Senderos has been ruled out of action for six months after he ruptured his Achilles tendon. The player has only been part of the club’s first-team squad for two months after he joined from Arsenal in June.
The English Premier League club said on their official website that "The club can confirm Philippe Senderos underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in Finland today (Wednesday). The surgery went well and the club are hopeful of a return to training within six months."
The 25-year-old central defender had been set to feature in the Switzerland squad to face Austria in a friendly today, but pulled out after complaining of a toe injury. He then suffered the Achillies rupture when training with Fulham ahead of their opening EPL match this weekend against Bolton Wanderers.
The injury means that Senderos will also be unable to play for his country as they begin their 2012 UEFA European Football Championship qualifying campaign. National team coach Ottmar Hitzfeld told the Swiss FA’s official website that: “It's incredibly bad luck for Philippe. A hard blow to him personally, for his club but also for the national team.”
Senderos had joined Arsenal in 2003 after coming through the ranks at Swiss club Servette. In his seven seasons he featured in 64 league games and scored four goals. His involvement at first-team level with the Gunners was curtailed after falling out with manager Arsene Wenger. He had spells on loan at AC Milan and Everton before making the move to Craven Cottage this summer.
The defender also featured for Switzerland in their shock 1-0 victory over eventual champions Spain at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but his involvement came to an end after injuring his ankle in the 36th minute. In total, he has won 41 caps.
