Fumiya Hidaka wins Boys 400m freestyle title: Day one – 2011
FINA World Junior Championships, Lima
Fumiya Hidaka of Japan dominated the Boys 400m freestyle final on the initial day of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation organised 3rd World Junior Championships on Tuesday, August 16, in Lima, Peru.
The 17-year-old Hidaka, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the final, posted a new championship record time of 3 minutes and 50.97 seconds to grab the gold medal of the event. His time was 0.84 seconds under the previous championship mark of 3 minutes
and 51.81 seconds, made by Danila Izotov of Russia in August, 2008. He was also 10.90 seconds behind Paul Biedermann’s world record of 3 minutes and 40.07 seconds, set at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist was trailed by Chad Bobrosky of Canada, who remained just 0.49 seconds behind him and secured silver medal of the swim, with a timing of 3 minutes and 51.46 seconds. Evan Pinion of United States was the third fastest swimmer of the event,
as he was only 0.01 seconds behind Bobrosky and clinched the bronze medal of the event, with a timing of 3 minutes and 51.47 seconds.
In the meantime, Gabriele Detti of Italy emerged as the fourth fastest swimmer of the discipline, as he was 0.06 seconds slower than his former finisher and reported in a time of 3 minutes and 51.53 seconds. He was trailed by his team-member, Andrea Mitchell
D'Arrigo, who remained 1.66 seconds behind him and submitted a fifth best time of 3 minutes and 53.19 seconds.
Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Matthew Ian Johnson and Reed Malone of United States demonstrated their exhausting efforts, as they were trying to escape each other for the sixth position of the event but they ended on the finishing wall in a same time of 3 minutes
and 57.25 seconds. Keegan Zanatta of Canada settled as the eighth finisher of the swim, with a timing of 3 minutes and 57.34 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd was thrilled with the heart winning performances of international youth, who were trying to claim podium finishes.
