Assuming that they were new, would the great fighters of WW2 do as good a job over Iraq as today's super hi-tech fighters do ?

  1. BATISTA!

  2. uhh. fight

  3. Hardly. A modern air to air missile could take out a WW2 fighter before the guy could even shoot back. And with no counter measures they would be very vulnerable to ground based missiles.

  4. why not, there was no opponent either way

  5. The ability of the human mind to learn hasn't changed much since the invention of the wheel. I'm quite sure that they would be able to learn how to control the planes now, as they did then.

  6. maybe better cause they won with what they had and with the better tech they wouldn't have to do as much.

  7. 0_0 That's a really good question. Can they get through wall's of surface to air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery? Could they fight Iraqi MiGs? Good question... I'd bet their prop engines would give a much weaker heat signature for the missiles to lock on. They could be easily modified for chaff dispensers. They could fly as fast as today's A-10 Thunderbolt. Some, such as the P-47, can take massive amounts of damage. They could fly so slow that modern fighters (and old missiles) could easily overshoot.

Maybe.. just maybe. If those pilots know our fighters' and air defenses' weaknesses and exploit them ruthlessly, they may stand a chance.

  8. as

  9. It depends on what the pilot had for breakfast.

  10. 5,000,000,000,000 dollars cheaper

  11. yes

  12. Surely you jest...or, maybe you just need a closer look at our newest planes...lol...

  13. Even though there is no real opposition other than ground fire, WWII fighters would have a major shortcoming compared to modern aircraft: they do not have smart weapons.

Many of the combat missions over Iraq are being flown by UAV's, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.  These are not faster than WWII fighters, but can stay aloft for extended period of time. They serve as launch platforms for very accurate guided weapons, like the hellfire missile. These weapons are far more effective than a strafing run from a P51.

  14. sure if the pilots are in decent condition =)

  15. no their old so that means their slow and stiff
