Question:

Fun activities to do with my horse?

I'm training my 5 year old gelding and I usually give him a day off and do something fun with him. Usually we go on a trail ride and gallop in the field, but the bugs are SO BAD at this time of year that we can't even hit the trails.

I'm wondering, what can I do with him that he'll enjoy? It doesn't have to be riding, just something fun for us.

What kind of stuff do you do with your horse when your not training?

Give me some ideas!! :) thanks.

  1. You can brush him and give him lots of treats, if you have an indoor arena, you can put him in the indoor arena and lunge or free lunge, or do some bareback riding. You can try to teach him some tricks. I like to go out and brush my horse after shows and give him lots of treats. We have been attempting to try some parreli(sp?) and natural horseman ship and buliding bonds.

  2. bare back  i think is awsome , just groomimg is cool also some times  i just get on and have fun  .

  3. teach him ground tricks . You will form an amazing bond with him , and he willl trust you more. It can be like a 'project' to get your horse to maybe lift his leg , when you say leg and make a movement , or get him to lye down. or something fun like that :)

  4. Xbox

  5. often overlooked activity is swimming. any lakes or ponds in your area? most horses love water, it is a great all-around exercise and a good way to foil the bugs. if youv never done it get some help from someone who has the first time out.

  6. well i just like to play around with my horse, i like having her chase me, and i luv to run with her, i also live in the mountians, so there are alot of trees, so sometimes i climb a tree and my horse will sniff and scratch the tree and look at me like what r u doing??? it is alot of fun

  7. you could groom him and pet him and give him lots of treets you could also hand walk him not very fun though or you could teach him a trick lol i have never done that tho!  you could just go on a hack or you could give him a bath!

    good luck have fun!

  8. Clicker training!

My 7-year-old gelding loves clicker training; it's not training to him, it's a game. You can teach almost anything, and your horse will have fun figuring out what you want him to do.

I started my boy with targeting - touch the target with your nose and get a treat. (His 'target' is a stuffed Tigger from the baby section of Target, and you can't get much cuter than that, especially when he carries it around with him.) It's perfect for days I just want to spend messing around with him, and he gets SO excited when he sees the treat bag, Tigger and the clicker.

He even gets upset when I run out of carrots... the treat bag's been thrown on the ground by an annoyed horse more than once!

  9. Bareback riding, it is so much fun, and you can do it almost anywhere.

If you live near some sort of water, you could go swimming with your horse

  10. Well what i normally do is go out to this field and i sit and read while my horse gunner grazes near me... he loves it because im near and we just relaxe
