Fun alphabet game for 8 yr old?

Question

I want to help my newly acquired 8 yr old her ABC. She knows how to sing the song but have difficulties writing the letters and pronounciation.. any games recommendation to help her learn. Or anything else i can do to help.

Leap frog has alphbet magnets for the fridge.  One set has just the letters and it sings a little song when you put the letter in.  It tells the sound that the letter makes.  There is also another one that teaches simple 3 letter words.  They are a favorite in our house...

have your child and yourself play this game. you pick a topic such as grocery store after that you start it off and say something that starts with an a such as apple. your child has to say apple and something that starts with a b. then you say apple whatever b was and c. you just keep going until all the letters are done with.

My first suggestion would be to speak to the 8 year olds doctor or teacher to see why they are having difficulty with the alphabet at age the age of eight.

Are there any leraning issues that you should know about - or is it just a simple situation where nobody taught them. If you know up front if the child has learning difficulties, you could get suggestions that can help with ways that child may learn best! Some childrenleran by more tactile means, other in a more visual manner, etc...

Here are a few more simple suggestions:

Play I Spy- Whenever you are out, have the child find a specific letter every place that they can - when they get more davnaced, have them identify a letter and have you look for where they found it. My daughte still loves this game and you can vary it for age level and leraning - colors, numbers, items, grouping, etc..

Label things around the house that start with specific letters -  Make up a number of letter cards and play the game - today we are going to label everything thatstrats with a " B" - etc...

Cut letters out of old magazines and glue to paper with that letter written on it.

Whenever possible- make the alphabet learning FUN - that will keep your child motivated!

i used to have a boggle junior game in which u had to pick a word and spell it like it does on the card before the time runs out. for a harder game you would cover the cards spelling or picture to help spell or read byself. You can probably find it on Ebay or Amazon.com

this thing had my kid knowing all his letters by two, and phonics before 3. now at three and a half he's reading at second or third grade level.

check out their "word whammer" too. it's similar, but lets (or asks) the kid to build three letter words.

computer software: chicka chicka boom boom (it is a book)

also ..make games ...

1. take a deck of playing cards...get some sticker letters or put letters on making tape over numbers...then play go fish

2. make a candy land game with alphabet letters...

3. index cards...put the upper case and lower case letters on them...treat it like a memory game

4. label objects around the house...especially in her bedroom...you can put on masking tape. As she touches or uses those pieces..have her say what it is...remember to speak slowly..and break up the syllables...(pre-reading).

5. read books with her....read at every opportunity you get!

it takes practice...make it fun and talk with her teacher....

A fun thing to do (and I am not sure how far along your 8 yr. old is) but if you have cut-outs or blocks or something of all the leters, lay them on the ground and then say an easy word like, apple, boy, girl, and tell her to run to the letter that it starts with. I would usually give a prize for every one right.
