Question:

Fun board games for adults?

by  |  earlier

My husband and I are going to my brother and his wife's place because they just had a baby a few weeks ago. We'll be staying there two nights and since we won't be able to really go anywhere with the baby, we were thinking it would be fun to buy a few really fun board games to play. Anyone have any good suggestions? We already have cranium, catch phrase, and apples to apples. My brother and his wife tend to like trivia type games or games that make everyone laugh. Something unusual would be better than something common (ie, not monopoly, scattegories, trivial pursuit, etc etc) Thanks for the help!! :)

Carcassonne is a tile-based German-style board game for two to five players, designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published in 2000 by Hans im Glück in German and Rio Grande Games in English. It received the Spiel des Jahres award in 2001. It is named after the medieval fortified town of Carcassonne in southern France, famed for its city walls. The game has spawned many expansions and spinoffs, inspired several PC and console versions. The game's wooden follower pieces, colloquially called meeples (a portmanteau of my people[1]) have become a symbol of European board gaming.

  4. hehe love Apples to apples....my personal favorite is Sorry.

  5. balderdash is my favorite!!

  6. Two games that are always good for a laugh:

Balderdash - making up phony definitions for real words.  "Beyond Balderdash" has other categories, like making up a fake plot for real movies.  The object is guess which answer is true.

Loaded Questions - answer different questions, like "what super power would you want to have?" or "what was your most embarrassing moment in school?"  Then one person tries to guess who gave what answer.

For trivia, I like DVD board games, like Scene It.

  7. If you like good party games and enjoy Cranium and Apples to Apples, you might try Cranium Hoopla - a cooperative game played by everyone racing against the timer, getting the other players to guess cards with drawing, charades style acting, and word clues.

Another fun, and funny party game is GiftTrap, which is all about figuring out which of some imaginary (and often rather wacky) gifts to give.  (Warning: A few cards in the game are a bit risque; a little pocket is included to place such cards in out of the game if you are playing with people where such cards would be out of place).

For games with a little more strategy, you might look at:

Zooloretto - this clever game is themed around building a zoo.  Each round, you can take one of the trucks carrying animals available, or add a new animal - but you have to be careful, since everyone else will get a chance to take the truck before you get another turn.  It takes cleverness and planning to get the best filled zoo.

Ticket To Ride - a quick playing game where you try to collect sets of cards to place train routes across the country, trying to connect lots of destinations.

Might not be for everyone, but the game Ca$h N' Gun$ is good for some laughs; its a game of bluffing and threats as you use cards - and more importantly, foam guns - to "negotiate" over money (you're all bank robbers who can't agree on how to split it).

There's tons of good games out there!

  8. M & M's Party Game is lots of fun, and it is for four players.

  9. Candy Land

  10. If you are looking for strategy games, Board Game Geeks is a great resource.

For lighter games, consider any of the 10 Days in (USA or Africa or Asia or Europe).

  11. For me, sequence is a favorite, because people can play it even when theyre really drunk. i also love clue.

however, if youre looking to have alot of fun, catchphrase and scattergories are great. catchphrase especially because people get really into it.

i like scattergories for more laid back parties because it's pretty chill and also pretty funny. one time the category was school supplies and the letter was M. i wrote down math staples, and we all had a good laugh for about 10 minutes for all the silly answers we got.

  12. there are 2 board games we love and are easy to play. both games are made by the company named jax. one is called sequence, which is a very good game,  and the other is called king in the corner

  13. We like Sequence and Pictionary.

  14. play hangman

  15. Taboo is a neat game and it is great for teams of two or more.  You have to get your partner or other team members to say a word or phrase by giving them clues about it, but you are given a list of words you are not allowed to use.  For example, when I had to get my team members to say "birth certificate" I was not allowed to say born, baby, and a few other words that are some of the first ones that come to mind when you think "birth certificate".  It can be a lot of fun.

Don't forget scrabble, always a great choice, and card games are fun too.

    Have a great time.
