  1. Perhaps a portable dvd player, those new watercolor markers that don't leave stains, sticker activity book, and maybe an ipod.

  2. My kids love a CD player for music, they each have their own and listen to their own music. We also bring our View Master though that could cause car sickness as well I would imagine.

Once I read an answer on here where a lady used a cookie sheet (with edges) and magnets of alphabet and stuff I thought it was a great idea.

  3. I travel with my son from NJ to FL once a year. He's 6 and he loves his portable DVD player. We always bring his Leapster. He enjoys having coloring books and crayons as well. For Christmas this year, I bought him a Fisher Price kid-tough digital camera, and he spent our trip home from FL taking about 1000 pictures.

  4. Our Nintendo DS lite;s come in handy for car trips. Coloring books/drawing pads and crayons are always a good one. You 9 year old might like a word search book. Flash cards that they can do to each other. They have *color* shapes* and letter* flash cards for the youngest.

We play a lot of games like word association and *I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing..." and how many red cars do we pass for the next x miles.

I agree the dvd player is good- if you don't have one but have a laptop, you can play dvd's on that. Usually I bring both and some headsets so they can watch different things if they want.

Anything you plan on bringing- do not show them. Let it be a surprise once you get in the car. It's just better that way and it makes it more fun for them.

My 5 year old takes her littlest pet shops (she has them in a small Tupperware container with a handle) on our road trips.

If they get really fussy, a brisk walk at a rest area does wonders.

  5. Pipe Cleaners!  We have all kinds of fun with those!  Make characters & animals out of them, string beads on them, make jewelry, shape letters & numbers, have guessing games ("What's this?"), play 'fishing' (make fish & poles with them), etc.  The possibilities are endless :D

  6. We take trips from SC to WI a few times a year. We have 3 children, 4, 2, 1. So I know about this for sure!

You can get a portable dvd player that goes in the car, and mount it on the ceiling of the car or on the back of a headrest. Disney movies, or whatever will occupy them for a long time.

Also those doodle pads you can get. It has a writing 'pen' attached w/ a string to the doodle pad, those are fun for them to do in the car as well. You can tell them to draw things they see along the way.

Bringing crayons and coloring books is something they can do in the car too.

And you can just let them bring some of their own toys to play with. Bring like 5 different ones, and let them play with like 2 at a time, and rotate them out with the others.

    Hope that helps!
