Hi,

I've been to Cancun about 5-6 times and went to all the tourist traps so this time I'm looking for some "non touristy" things to do in Cancun... any ideas? I'm open to anything...Thanks!

  1. I recommend highly that you visit the island located just off the north shore of Cancun known as Isla Mujeres. You can tour the island on your own self guided day trip. Just google getting to Isla Mujeres, and wording such as this and you will find plenty of useful information.

If you have not visited Playa Del Carmen, this is a town located 45 minutes south of Cancun and well worth a visit. It is much less commercial than Cancun and a with a very laid back atmosphere.

If you have been to both of these places, then perhaps the best idea I have for you is to take an ADO bus from Cancun's main bus terminal, and go to Merida. This is a colonial style city located 4 hours west of Cancun. It is something you should plan to do on at least an overnight trip, I recommend two nights.

Of course there is always the town of Tulum, located south of the ruin site by the same name. Finally, Cozumel is nice but certainly much more commercial than Isla Mujeres, I prefer Isla.

Have fun planning your side trips,

  2. Why don't you try another place in Mexico.  There are many other places.  Oaxaca and then down to Puerto Escondido would a great combination.  The ruins in Oaxaca are ab fab .  Puerto Escondido is far more laid back and not so glitzy.

Both of these places will alter your perspective of Mexico and will never be forgotten.

I am sure you will get a big response to your question but that's my two cents worth.

If I didnt know better I would say Cancun is not a Mexican city.
