Question:

Fun things to do in Pittsburgh?

I am going to Pittsburgh for work Sept. 12-18. I'm taking my husband too. I'll be in workshops until 4:00 every night. We are staying at the Westin. What are some things my husband can do during the day, and also some good things we can do in the evening together. It is also our 6 year anniversary on the 14th. Any ideas?

  1. watch Steelers pre-season!

  2. I'm going to assume you are staying at the Westin Convention Center hotel Downtown.

You're going to have to ignore the people who suggested a Steelers game. The Steelers are in Cleveland that weekend. But the Pirates are in town all that week. They suck, but PNC Park is a wonderful ballpark that everyone should visit at least once.

For your anniversary I would suggest a couple of nice restaurants:

    The Grand Concourse

It's in an old train station across the Smithfield Street Bridge at Station Square. The food is good, but the atmosphere is the reason you go there. You most likely will need a reservation. They have a dress code, so make sure you hubby brings a sportscoat or blazer.

    The LaMont

It's just up the hill from Station Square on Mt. Washington. If you really want a nice Pittsburgh experience, take one of the inclines from Station Square up to Mt. Washington. The LaMont is pretty fancy and you will definitely need a reservation, but the view is very nice. They also have a dress code. I know hubby will need a jacket, but I can't remember if they require ties.

    Ruth Chris or Morton's

Both are really good steakhouses Downtown. Ruth Chris is in PPG Place and Morton's is on Liberty Avenue near the Cultural District.

    Bravo Franco

This is a very good place for Italian food. I love their pasta. They are on Penn Avenue in the Cultural District, right next to Heinz Hall.

    Lemongrass Cafe

If you like Thai/Cambodian food, I'd try this place. It's a little more casual, too. It's on Sixth Street in the Cutural District, across from the Byham Theatre.

Speaking of the Cultural District. You may want to see if there are any shows you may want to see. I know while you are here, Wicked is in town. Check http://www.culturaldistrict.org to find out all that is going on.

During the day, there are a lot of things that your hubby can do. Here are just a few:

    Close to the hotel:

Andy Warhol Musuem-right across the Seventh Street Bridge (Andy Warhol Bridge) on the North Side.

Strip District - no real reason to go here except for all the WONDERFUL food and old-fashioned markets and shops.

May want to take the bus (or drive, but these places don't have the greatest parking situations):

South Side - There are tons of really interesting shops and restaurants in this part of town.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Carnegie Museum of Art (one admission) - it's in the Oakland section of town, between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Lots of great places to eat in Oakland, too.

These are just some things that I can think of off the top of my head. There is so much more! I put a link to the Visit Pittsburgh website below, too. You can find out lots of stuff on there.

  3. Andy Warhol Museum

    National Aviary

    Carnegie Science Center

    Dependable Drive-In Theater

    Frick Park

Brooks and Dunn at Post Gazette Pavilion At Star Lake

East End Brewing (At Pittsburgh's own microbrewery, you can stop in for Growler Hours and pick up a half-gallon of delicious fresh brewed beer to go)

For a romantic restaurant try:  Isabela On Granview

    Or

    Georgetowne Inn (especially at night)

    LOL

I dunno depends on what ur into...

  4. Steelers Game, (maybe not for the anniversary, but one of the other days)

  5. I lived in Pittsburgh and suburbs for fifty years.  I just recently was back for a few days - not long enough.

The Blockhouse (remains of Fort Pitt) is a must for history buffs, as is Point Park (both near the Westin).  Southside (Station Square) has great shops, restaurants, history.  Northside has the National Aviary. I spent a whole day there early this month.  There is abundant night life.  If you like jazz, Pittsburgh is the best place north of New Orleans.

In the Oakland section is one of the greatest natural history museums. My favorite part might be Dinosaur Hall. There are literally dozens of great parks where you can go relax with a box lunch, including the animal free areas of the Highland Park Zoo (one of top 20 in USA).

Not to be missed is an evening ride on one of the boats (Gateway Clipper fleet). Some serve dinner and have dancing.

I think you will wish you had more than a few days to spend there.
