Fun things to do in upstate NY?

Question

What are some outdoorsy things i can do with my friends and or Girlfriend?

For people that live in NY or have visited, what are some things that you did? Do you know any beautiful places to go or attractions besides like great escape and water parks?

• hike up whiteface mountain (lake placid) or even just go to the olympic center there.

• visit fort ticonderoga

• go to one of the beaches (tupper lake, saranac lake, schroon lake...there are many to choose from, although i like the small town charm of schroon lake)

• go to the races at saratoga (doesn't start for a while yet, but you didn't mention when you're going)

• take a tour thru a winery - there are many speckled all over the state

• go hiking in the adirondacks

if i had to suggest a time to go, i'd suggest late summer/ early fall. the change of leaves is breathtaking, there aren't as many bugs & it's not as hot. but no matter when you go, you're sure to have a good time. it's a beautiful part of the state.

We just got back to Ohio from a short trip to NY.  If you are into unusual museums,  the Erie Canal museum in Syracuse is really nice, there is a baseball museum in Cooperstown, Seneca Falls has a museum on the history of the women's movement, and Corning has a fantastic museum about glass.  Something that looked like fun, but was the wrong time of year for us was taking a cruise down the Erie Canal (takes a couple days).  Watkins Glen State Park has a wonderful hiking trail that goes by 19 waterfalls.  It's only open from May to October, though.  Of course, there is the mother of all beautiful places - Niagara Falls.  Make sure that you do your homework, because a lot of places seem to be closed on Mondays.
