Question:

Funeral.. 14 month old..?

Saturday we have a funeral to go to, my dads uncle. I don't really have anyone that can watch my daughter who is almost 14 months. She has been to a funeral before, to my cousins about 10 months ago. Then she was almost 4 months so I didn't really worry about "dressing" her up.

What is something that would be appropriate to put her in to go to the funeral?

Also, for the calling hours tomorrow, should she just wear something nice and not to dressy?

  1. just anything not too bright and cheery. Brown black type of stuff- something easy for you to change her  in etc. Nothing dressy needed unless you want to. Just something not cheery and pink.

  2. When my son and I flew to Puerto Rico for my grandpa last month he just wore khakis and a white polo. So, just a white dressy shirt and khakis should be ok.

  3. Probably something that is comfortable for her to be in would be best.

  4. Holy S**t, Jess.  My heart just sank into the pit of my stomach and I was on the verge of tears when I saw this question on my profile page.  It took several minutes for me to compose myself enough to read it.

I'm not glad your dad's uncle died, but I am so relieved it's not who I thought it was.  I am sorry to hear of your loss.

I think people will understand if you don't dress Ava up.  Nobody expects you to run out and buy her something fancy for an unexpected event such as a funeral.  From what I've seen, you always dress her really nice, so I'm sure whatever you choose will look just fine.  Don't forget to bring a change of clothes just in case, and I wouldn't worry at all what the spares look like.

I was going to say she could wear what she wore to your cousin's funeral (another tragic loss I am sorry for), but I'm sure she's grown out of it by now.  Duhhhh my brain is on vacation tonight.

    Hugs and prayers.

  5. Any cute dress would be appropriate for her.  This day and age, no one really needs to get too formal, and all black is passe.  Just wear 'nice' clothes.  Ditto for the calling hours, just a cute summer or fall dress for her.

  6. Hey Jessica, sorry about your dad's uncle.

I had to go to my daughter's great-grandmother's funeral when my little one was just 10 months old and she was fine. I just put her in a nice outfit for both events, a cute little sundress. As for how she behaved, she fussed a bit during the service but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Chances are grieving family members will be happy to have the pleasant distratction of a baby around at a sad event.

I hope everything goes well, and sorry again about your loss!

  7. the question got me until i read it just let her wear something nice nothing to dressy

  8. I dont think they have to be in anything dreary. I would maybe go with something not too colorful though. Anything earth toned should be fine. Either way, dressy or not is fine- just have to work with what you have I suppose.

  9. I gotta say, by that question's title --- my thoughts when a completely different way..... thank goodness it wasnt what I thought!!!!!!

Anyway, I'd just put her in something nice but neutral colored. You want it to look like you know its not the time and place to show off a cute and pretty baby, but you want her to be there to support the rest of the family.

    In my opinion anyway.

  10. My Grandpa passed away a few weeks ago and I took my son to both the visitation and the funeral. I dressed him nicely for both events but not in the "all black" or anything. He actually was well-behaved and a pleasant distraction for all of us grieving. Sort of a reminder that life goes on full-circle kind of a thing.

Sorry to hear about your dad's uncle.

Really I'm sure you have stuff nice enough for her to wear so I wouldn't worry about buying anything new, just a nice outfit for both.

  11. I'm so glad the title went into something other then what I thought sorry for the death though i would just dress her in something cute and comfortable
