  1. It is most likely Fungus, or Columnarius that your fish has. You can treat them with a combination of melafix and pimafix. They contain natural ingredients that are less harmful to most fish. I would use these and a salt bath where you add 1 tsp for every gallon of water.

  2. First, get some anti fungal product from a petstore for your aquarium.  After you treat the water as directed, I would recommend you put in a little sea salt, about a teaspoon per gallon, to help prevent future outbreaks.

  3. What exactly does it look like? You will need to know what it is to be able to get the kind of medication that your fish needs.

  4. As Cc said, the most likely causes are fugus or columnaris, however, something as weak as Melafix and/or Pimafix will have no affect.  These are solely preventatives, and using them to treat existing infections wouldn't be much different than trying to treat gangrene with Neosporin...  Salt can be fairly effective, but in many cases, dips are so stressful that they otherwise damage the fish, and allow more salt resistant pathogens to infect.

The first step it to determine whether you're dealing with fungus or columnaris.  Fungus ( http://www.toptropicals.com/pics/aqua/di... ) will be very three dimensional, protruding from the skin, and generally off-white in color, while columnaris ( http://www.flippersandfins.net/Images/Fl... ) is more of a fibrous mat that is true white.  For fungus, most Ich meds are extremely effective-- anything containing malachite green and, if possible, formalin (Quick Cure, Rid Ich) or copper (Aquarisol, Organicure, Cupramine, Coppersafe).  Be sure to remove any activated carbon from the filter during treatment, and if using malachite green based medications, keep the tank dark, as malachite green degrades with exposure to light.  If it is columnaris, Triple Sulfa, Trisulfa, Maracyn 2, Maracyn TC, TC Capsules, Furan 2, Kanaplex, or similar gram negative effective medications would be ideal.  Again, remove any activated carbon from the filter, and keep the tank dark for tetracycline or minocycline, as it also degrades with exposure to light.

  5. add rocksalt and methylene blue with good aearation and daily water change of 10 percent about 2 two 3 days will see improvement
