Funny situation while in Japan..?

It's always fun trying to explain your own language to someone else since you're forced to really consider when/ how to use certain phrases.. This is an example of one such situation while in Japan--- How do you differentiate broken and out or order?

The students in the class were trying to use the phrases interchangeably.. but it doesn't quite work that way..

broken = kowareta (broke, cant fix), koshou (broke, can fix if you want)

out of order = koshou (broke, can fix if you want)

'shuurichuu' or 'koshouchuu' are best translation of 'out of order (notice on the washing machine or something)'. means broken, but im going to fix later in japanese.
