Question:

Further Maths AS+A level?

I have just completed my GCSE's and next year i am taking;

Maths+Further Maths

Economics

Government and Politics

Philosophy and ethics

Going into my final Maths GCSE exam i had scored approx 97.5% to give you an idea of my ability.

However i am wondering just how hard is Further Maths going to be as i wish to take it for AS and continue as a fourth (if you can count it as a whole subject) A-level.

I do not really want to have to go through with it all year and come out with anything less than an A. I also know of people in the year above who are dropping it after AS who are very good at Maths.

Is there anyone here who has taken it or has friends who have taken it, and how well have they done and how hard is it?

Thank you

  1. I havn't taken it but I am picking my AS and A2 levels and have got similar results as you in the exams. Looking at the reults of schools which do offer it it looks like the people that take it are not expected to get anything less than an A and from the reults that I have seen only a tiny proportion of the people that do take it get less as that is obviously the standard you have to be at. I would ask your teacher as they should tell you if they think you suitable.

  2. Further Maths is HARD - and it's entirely different from the sort of maths you will have done before. All of a sudden you have to think in an arbitrary number of dimensions, and your brain starts leaking out your ears...

    That said, universities know full well how hard it is, and will take that into account when giving you an offer. And if you want to study maths or science you will have a huge advantage over people who haven't (in fact if you want to study maths at a top university you'll find it's a requirement).

  3. I dont know about further maths, but maths a-level is really difficult.

    I did it a year early and i am so glad i did!!! I got an A at GCSE however

    a level is nothing like it.. lets just say i might aswell have just sat there in the exam.

    However if you put lots of effort in you are sure to do well and if you don't understand something be sure to ask your teacher.

    I don't know about further maths but if you are good at maths a-level you would probably be good at further maths.
