I'm in the first year of sixth form taking my AS levels. I attended a metting recently about applying to Oxford university to take Physics, and although it's not neccessary, they prefer if you have it - but I don't!

I am considering studying AS/A2 Further maths over the summer hols coming and take all the exams in the next year (AS and A2) - what do you guys reckon?

  1. I was in the same position as you- doing AS maths but not further maths, and ended up taking both AS and A2 further maths at A-Level.  And I'm now studying physics at Oxford...

If your school will let you, I would definitly do it, and make sure you mention it in both your personal statement and at interviews if you get them.  Even if you don't end up at Oxford, the maths will definitely help at University.

But do remember that about 1/3 of Oxford physics undergraduates don't have further maths, so don't worry if it doesn't work out- just do whatever extra modules you can fit in.

Oh and do try and do as many pure modules as possible, they will be much more helpful than stats or decision.  Mechanics is helpful to but pure is definitly best.

  2. Go for it! I took a fancy to O Level Astronomy (after finding a book in the college library) when I was at 6th Form, they didn't teach it but let me do it myself and sit the exam. I was taking Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Physics As at the time. And yes, I passed the Astronomy.

I'm assuming that you're taking Physics and some other Maths course so it's not like it'll be a whole other subject.

    Good luck!
