The IPL player auction is set to clash with the 2011 world cup matches, which starts on 18 February.
It has been revealed that the player auction is expected to be delayed by another few months. The dates of the auction were originally extended from 8 November to 9 January. The expected delay is feared because of the Indian cricket board’s failure to resolve
the issues surrounding two franchises; Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.
India’s cricket governing body, BCCI, has recently resolved the conflict going on with Kochi franchise. The franchise was given clearance to participate in the 2011 competition after the new ownership pattern was presented to the BCCI.
The Kochi franchise was issued a termination notice, by the BCCI, on 27 October over their inability to resolve internal ownership issues. Kochi’s inclusion means that the fourth edition of the IPL will have at least 8 teams. The final number of teams will
be decided after a judgment is passed on the future of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833.
BCCI’s resolution of the Kochi case raised question as to why the other two teams are being held at bay. A BCCI official presented the boards opinion stating that the ownership of Kochi has not changed and there have only been a few adjustments in the percentage
share each owner holds. In the case of the other two teams however, there were changes in the ownership of the team; which was not reported to the BCCI.
Defending the Kochi decision, the BCCI official said, "There is only an alteration among the percentage of shareholding within the same people who originally held it. So technically there was no transfer where a new party was found in the case of
the other two teams.” He continued, “And in the case of Kochi owners nobody has changed from the minority to a majority position."
The conflict between the two teams is destined to prolong as any decision will prompt the losing party to approach the high court. Justice BN Srikrishna has already passed a stay order on the expulsion of Rajasthan but opted to step down for the Kings XI
case stating he had once represented the owners of the franchise.
