Question:

Further ramblings Grannyjill. Do you like this?

There is something to be said for growing old

A slight hearing loss, a dimming of eyes.

Life can be viewed through rose-tinted glasses,

Unpleasant questions selectively ignored,

And laughter gained from misheard remarks

"I've just seen there's a Fair in the Park"

A Bear! In the park?

Why is a bear there?

Is it caged or ambling free?

(Oh, we must take it a bun).

"No, Granny, not a bear, a fair"

What a disappointment, but still

Just for a moment

it was fun.

Reading a question on this site

'Why do people with small ears

find it hard to park neatly?'

My burst of laughter brought

my dear one to my side,

Telling him my blunder,

we laughed till we cried.

'Small cars, small cars'

How silly of me!

What a disappointment, but still

Just for a moment

it was fun.

(both of these verses are based on truth)

  1. marvelous! yes, i like this! thanx 4 the smile!

  2. I love this snapshot of conversation!  I notice my own hearing diminished except when I have a stethoscope firmly plugged in, and now I shall be more aware of poetic fodder!  Thanks so much, this made my day!

  3. Ah, and this is why I say I can't wait to get older...older than I am, it must be such an adventure. And don't anybody discourage my foolish naivete. The inevitable will happen, so why not be happy about it!

This poem made me laugh out loud...wish I had a dear one to call to my side to discover, not my blunder, per se, but the brilliance of a virtual friend who lives across the ocean. Thank you for the laughs, Grannyjill.

  4. To hear with an ear as age progresses

is to hear with a ring, an ear ring.

    May your rings always bring

ears to focus as laughter sings

Senility with laughter can't be all that bad.  Somehow I think you have a long way to go before that!  Keep those rose coloreds on as you pen more verses, funny and true.

  5. Jill, this is great.  I foresee this one being around for a very long time.  It's classic, witty, and people can relate. I love the way you end them. Thanks for the laugh.  Excellent write.

  6. There was this window dsiplay for Format Photography I could have sworn said Instant Pornography...

Lovely poem Grannyjill, I really did lol at the small ears.

  7. These can scarcely be called "ramblings!" Like the true poet you are, you have illustrated with laughter the inevitable fact of mortality of all living creatures. You have portrayed the good in this fact, rather than bludgeoning the reader with angst.

In these ways, your poem answers one of your own recent questions about the poetic differences between the young and the mature members of our species.

  8. OMG!!! (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

You have me in tears from laughing so hard!

'Small ears!' So, did you answer the question?

    I'll be giggling all day!

Thanks Jill, I REALLY needed this.

  9. A few years ago I was walking by an older couple near a book stand and they were staring in rapt wonder at the great variety of magazines displayed there.  Finally, the lady's eyes fixed on a magazine with the letters PSM on the cover and I overheard her chuckle, embarrassed, and say to her husband (?), "PMS, they even have a magazine about that!" I could not resist and said, "Yes, it's a monthly, but the subscribers wished it came out less often."  Sometimes, the televsion seems utterly superfluous.  Thanks for reminding me of this, and for bringing me the warmth of a late summer day, because Autumn will come to all of us too soon and we will have to accept it with grace and good cheer.  We now know a little better the route that must be taken, because a wonderful map has been drawn by a loving "cartographer."  Stay well...

  10. this is fabulous Granny!

  11. Dondi does these things regularly.  I know this for a fact, because I have seen him do it.

  12. Giggles - great read.  My mom (82) and I talk by phone - she is hard of hearing and talks on a cell phone that cuts out all the time. We have had many conversations that - I am unsure of - what was said was actually said ♥

  13. Excellent, I share your inabilities. I read small ears as small cars... I had to read this three times before I realized you had typed ears... is sad... took me three tries to laugh.
