Fury banks the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy
The saying is that money cannot buy happiness; it just makes misery far more bearable.
The opening two races on Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire card did not carry the prestige tags of Pattern class but the size of the cheques on offer to the winners more than made up for the missing black type cachet.
There was £278,898 on offer to the winner of the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy – double that for the winner of the Group One Middle Park Stakes the day before – and it was Fury who took the prize.
The field split into two groups but the far side runners always had the advantage as State Opera led the pack through to the three-furlong pole but Kieren Fallon was simply biding his time on Fury, trained by William Haggas, who had looked impressive when winning his maiden at Newbury last month.
Fury came through fast to take up the running about a furlong out and then pulled one-and-three-quarter lengths clear of Pisco Sour, with Formosina in third.
“You need a bit of luck and we had a good draw in 24,” Haggas said. “He ran out the clear winner and I thought he quickly put the race to bed. He’s a nice horse and did it well, considering that he had his first run only two weeks ago. His owner, Mrs Thompson, asked me before the race what I thought of him and I said that I think he could be a black-type horse.
“I have not got him entered in anything and he will probably be put away now. We geared everything to this - there is a possibility of going for the Horris Hill but I have never liked that race so we will probably put him away.”
Fury’s victory made it two great days for owner breeder Cheveley Park Stud, which also enjoyed success at Newmarket on Friday in the Group One Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes with Hooray.
Together was heavily backed for the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies’ Trophy, mainly on her close second to the highly-rated White Moonstone in the Grade One Fillies’ Mile at Ascot the previous Saturday. She was clearly the best on official ratings but it was equally clear that Johnny Murtagh was not entirely happy on Aidan O’Brien’s filly even at the start.
Murtagh was rushing her into the race from the start but then she settled behind Masaya, who was smartly away for Tom Queally as she led on the far rail.
Together looked like getting close to the leader at the quarter-mile pole but then she started to drift markedly right and it was Tale Untold, ridden by Richard Hughes, who came out of the pack to get into the race in the last furlong. She was catching the leader all the way to the line but Masaya held on by a short-head, with Together rallying when she got to the stands’ rail a neck away in third.
The victory broke a run of 41 consecutive losers at Newmarket for Masaya’s trainer, Clive Brittain.
Queally, riding his 82nd winner of the season, said:  “She stuck her head out and really tried for me,” he said. “Personally I didn’t think I got the verdict. I had my head down, pushing, and I actually thought Hughsie got me and then I said to Hughsie ‘did the one on the far side get us both?’
“Clive didn’t give me many instructions – he didn’t give me any really – and she sort of jumped and she was happy and halfway I said to myself ‘I’m really going well here’. Gave her a little bit of rain and she kept lengthening. She really tries and that’s half the battle.”
Brittain may not have had much to say to Queally before the race but the man who lives on a diet of optimism and unfeasibly early starts of the Newmarket gallops was in irrepressible mood in the winner’s enclosure. “Cheveley Park eat your heart out; 1000 Guineas next year, the secret is here,” rapped the septuagenarian trainer in reference to Hooray. “We’ve had a bit of a lean time but when you put me on a diet, I come out strong. She’s a tough little filly. You see the superstars, well mine are superstars in my eyes.
“I told him (Queally) to ride the race as he found it. She travelled well and they had to come by her. She was third in the race last week and I was not sure how the ground would suit her but it suited her all right. We’ll look at the 1000 Guineas - the windmills will be tilting at us - but that will be it for the year.”
