Question:

Fuses?? Can I use a fuse with a higher amp than the one I'm replacing?

Playstation 2 doesn't power-up at all after a bad thunderstorm. Took it apart and found a blown fuse near the on/off switch. It is 125V, 3.15A. No one near me carries this small fuse. The closest I found were 125V, 3A, 5A and 6A. Could I use the 5 or 6A or would this blow the whole thing?

I could order a new fuse online, but it ends up costing like $20 by the time I do shipping, etc.

Also, I don't even know if this will work.

Suggestions?

  1. Did you try a auto parts store? They have fuses that are used in cars.

    Just an idea.

  2. try it with the 3a first and see what happens

  3. If you used the 3A chances are it would not last.

If you used the 5A you would run a small chance of hurting the unit. But it is cheaper then the 20 buck shipping.

  4. use the 3A, using a bigger fuse than the one installed will allow too excessive overcurrent possibly leading to a shorted ps2

  5. The fuses are rated for a specific load , if you fool with this it may blow you playstation instead of the fuse. You decide if it is worth the risk

  6. When I went through radio receiver repair school in the army we were told that the electronics and electrical specs had a plus or minus 10 percent safety factor built into them. This guideline hasn't failed me yet.  Use the 3 amp fuse. If you haven't tried Radio Shack for the fuse, do so...they've been a good supplier of some off-beat electronic supplies.

  7. 3.15 isnt that far from 3. so , ps2 isnt drawing that much amps to turn on . And if 3 is not adequate at least the fuse will blow, right?  I would use a 3 just to see if that gets it to turn on, and I'd probably leave it there until it blew again. dont buy a 'slow blow' fuse.
