Future Prospect showed the Kentucky Derby cast how it’s done, as he handed Dodson Skaggs his first graded stakes win after 42 years
The old and experienced, 7-year-old gelding, Future Prospect, rallied in the stretch with General Quarters, as he was always prominent under jockey Edgar Prado to win the Grade 2 $170,000 Winstar Kentucky Cup at Turfway Park on 24 September.
Owner and Trainer, Dodson Skaggs, was near tears, as Future Prospect brought home the trainer’s first graded stakes' win in 42 years.
The wild aftermath of the 1 1/16 mile Kentucky Cup made history itself, and made Skaggs say that Future Prospect has been really good to him.
Skaggs, 76, sent Future Prospect up against the likes of Havelock, Workin for Hops, Strike Impact and Demarcation with the odds of 18 to 1.
Breaking out well from the gate and taking the lead form the front running, Strike Impact came down the backstretch.
General Quarters tried his best to overcome Future Prospect, but his efforts were all in vain, as Future prospect always stayed ahead of his rival’s sustained run.
It was a performance right from the top drawer, as he kept it under control throughout the final quarter mile to go on and hit the wire by three lengths over General Quarters, who finished behind Future Prospect for second position.
The New York bred son of Freud, out of Devil’s Waltz by Marshua’s Dancer, Future Prospect finished the job in 1 minute and 44.71 seconds over the synthetic surface of Turfway Park.
Future Prospect was the longest shot in a field of 8 horses, as the 17 to 1 shot, Demarcation, was the second longest shot in the field, finishing third after putting up a mild fight.
Future Prospect has now won two consecutive races, coming off a win in an allowance claimer at Churchill Downs, where he participated in a 6 ½ furlong dash over the Churchill Downs' dirt course.
On 2 July, 2011, under jockey M Cruz, Future Prospect downed his closest rivals, Grand Traverse and New Bay, who finished second and third, respectively, with a winning time of 1 minute and 16.06 seconds.
Future Prospect improved to 14 wins out of 29 starts, and earned $90,210 for the Kentucky Cup victory, shooting his lifetime earnings to $475,263,
