Future at Cleveland Browns: pressure on Pat Shurmur, Tom Heckert after Mike Holmgren’s exit – NFL News
A question mark about future on Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur’s careers has gained prominence since unceremonious departure of their immediate boss president Mike Holmgren a couple of days ago.
The prospects of these officials hit uncertainty since selling of the Cleveland Browns to Jimmy Haslam in a billion dollar deal reached earlier this year, and the pressure on their jobs increased further since arrival of new chief executive officer (CEO)
Joe Banner a week earlier.
President Mike Holmgren had already sounded his intentions of leaving Browns and a number reports have linked him to an interest for a coaching role with the Dallas Cowboys, although he has attempted to play down the hype amid persistence of rumours.
A day earlier, Holmgren himself and Banner confirmed that the official was leaving the Browns as his contract expired. He next day told a media gathering about his uncertain future, although he did divulge on future of his two main appointments, coach Shurmur
and GM Heckert.
Both these officials are nevertheless in an added pressure as far as their future with Browns is concerned. Their departure looks even more imminent since Holmgren’s departure, although they officially have refused to discuss the matter.
Coach Shurmur is into second year of his tenure with the team, and is yet to help the side to improve from five-six wins each season.
This year the Browns are rather sluggish from start to end, and the only three victories recorded so far do not bode well with the official’s long-term chances with the team. The new owner has a couple of times sounded his intentions clear that he wants
a winning team on the field. The coach must have heard that message clear, and will definitely be weighing options in front of him, although he is yet to make them public.
Equally worried must be the GM because he has remained the main force behind running affairs of the team, both at front office and coaching department.
CEO Banner has said that he will be taking some decisions that might not please some officials and after exit of Holmgren the next two main spots are the coach and GM.
