Question:

Future in France?

I recently posted a question regarding my hopes to one day move to Paris and write and paint.

My answers gave me a general idea that it is difficult to settle in Paris and get a job.

So, because all of the legal immigration stuff doesn't bother me, are there any cities in France that would allow me to explore the arts, get a job, get a flat, etc. but still experience the charm of Paris?

Thanks

  1. The place for ex-pats and artists is non other than St. Germain (the latin quarter in paris).

I suggest you try www.craigslist.org and go to the Europe section then Paris.  There is often other Americans looking for room mates.  There is also temp jobs available.

If you can learn massage therapy, it's a good business in Paris to earn some pocket change while you paint and write. I have good friend here making an honest living that way. He bought a table and put an ad in Fusac a Paris english speaking newsletter. Just be sure to write 'non sexual massage" to sift out the pervs.  He is an actor and manages just fine.

Have a great adventure, you only live once!

    Kind regards, Wendy

  2. The employment and legal situation is the same everywhere in France, probably worse since Paris is the political AND economic capital of France.

And the "legal immigration stuff" ought to worry you since they will arrest you if you violate their laws.

Don't be fooled by American right wing characterizations of the French as some sort of squishy soft liberal whoosies. You are going to a country where you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent and where the police can make southern red neck sherrifs look like cheerleaders for the ACLU.

  3. You can try south of france, in the east, the region of Marseille, Nice, Aix en Provence.

Aix is known to be a very artistic town.

Flats are a little expensives, but you can live in campings (they rent bungalows for month, a lot of people do this).

Don't dream too much, it's not because you'll be in Frnace that you'll be able to live of your art, or your artS.

Life is not very easy, as everywhere I guess... But french people really find life is expensive, and it's worst since we have changed our old moneys for euro.

But south is nice, very sunny, very touristic, there's a lot of things to do, and people are nice too.

    Generally!!

Bye, and see you soon in france??

oh, i've almost forgotten: you won't find easily a job if you don't speak french. We are very bad in foreign languages, and above all we LOVE french... Maybe with a lot of chance you could find a company that needs a perfect english speaker, but I doubt. So, you can begin lessons today!!!!!

  4. Go to Belgium, better !
