Future of HD DVD?

Is it true that it's been phased out? Toshiba will stop producing hd dvd discs right? So I have a few titles, what do I do? What happens if my player breaks, will I be able to purchase another one?

Yes, Toshiba has announced that they are shutting down production of HD-DVD players.

Type "toshiba"  into Yahoo! Search today and it shows news articles related to the shutdown:

If your player breaks within the warranty period, Toshiba must fix it. After the warranty period, Toshiba may still be able to fix it or you may be able to buy a used one from someone else on eBay or craigslist.

Your other option is to buy a "spare"  on close out.  BestBuy has them for about $149 for an HD-A3.  Repair costs are about $130 for some repairs such as a TV I had worked on about 8 years ago.  In the worst case scenario, it's just a really good upscaling DVD player.

On the other hand, save for kids sticking things into the player, it should probably work for years to come.  My Laserdisc player made it over 10 years and I just stopped using it.  My first DVD player is still going strong after 10 years.

(I don't watch my Beta and VHS tapes and my Laserdiscs any more and I bought an HD-A3 at Christmas time).

its all blu ray now, bye bye HD DVD. At least now you know what to buy, i held out because no one was sure who was going to win.
