Question:

Future outlook for graphic design?

I'm about to enter grade 11 and have been seriously thinking about what I want to do as a career, graphic design seems like something I would enjoy, however it also seems like a very competitive industry (this is purely speculative and just my observation).

This worries me because if there is an overflow of graphic designers I am going to a.) Have trouble finding a job, and b.) If there are a lot of graphic designs the salary will no doubt go down due to demand.

So, what can I expect if I decide to become a graphic designer (note: If I decide to do this I will go to college for the subject).

PS - Also if you have any ideas about a similiar career that applies creativity, I'm all ears.

thanks

  1. Graphic design is a competitive industry. If you are very creative and can "create" when asked, not just when you are inspired, and even when you are not very interested in the project, then you can make a career out of it.

Another field you might look into is Web Design. Often times, employers want to hire graphic designers that also know some HTML and CSS so the designer can work closely with a web developer and make a site look professional.

In my job, I am the designer and the developer. I design the Website and build the HTML and CSS layout from the design with handwritten code. I then develop any dynamic code that will be used to send or get data to or from the database. It's a daunting job and since it requires both left and right brain thinking it's not for everyone. This is not the norm though. As a designer at a web company you usually do not need to know any more than HTML and CSS at the most.

  2. Don't worry about an overflow of staff. New companies startup every single day with open positions. Believe in yourself and what you do, and just be dedicated. You can't go wrong. If you don't make it it's because you didn't try hard enough. Learn from failure, and you can always be self-employed in this area.

It is indeed a competitive industry but this means that a lot of companies and clients are willing to pay money for this kind of work. Graphics design is absolutely a great path to go down.

  3. From what I understand of the Grahpic Design industry there are ALOT of designers out there.  This shoudln't worry you too much, as it is the quality of the work that will make or break you.

If you are able to do amazing things with graphics, or create what a client is looking for, then you will succeed.  You will need to be talented with computers, graphics, and understanding what people want.

If this is you then good luck and have fun!
